Narrative Image making.

This project was so different to any other that I've done because we had to create a story board. I photographed a lake and using my observational skills I painted on to paper.

I then photographed each painting and loaded them into photoshop, adding a paper cut filter and two overlays one gravel the other sepia. I did this to all of the images and wrote on each one a poem I composed from words from famous poems.

My Art

My passion is art. I  love trying new media and I wanted to show you some of my pieces. My art includes  bare water-colour, paper and scalpel, colour pencils and charcoal etc. I have also added a page of my manga.

DPS

I have done approximately forty DPS's since I started my course. I have chosen Hokusai because he has influenced me In my personal artistic projects as well as my professional graphic design career. Every DPS is written in my own words and it represents my research; my thoughts and reflections on a designer or artist as well as the layout .

Manchester building project

This  project was about old and new Manchester.  I took 80 photographs of old and new Manchester buildings. My favourite part of the project was experimenting with different medias.  I also did some observational  drawing's of old Manchester using charcoal. Then I used water colour to depict new Manchester.  I then merged the two pictures of mix media in photoshop.I added traffic light colours as  gradients and placed a map of Manchester as the back drop.

In this second picture  I was influenced  by an unusual  Victorian building made of glass with a white frame. I reconstructed what I saw in dip pen and ink.  I  also did a brick building in dip pen and ink and then I merged the two ink images and used photoshop to manipulate the colour and reflect the images. Then I added a map and a black banner with manchester on it.

Heart of Darkness

Here are four images from my heart of darkness project. The brief for this project was really inspiring, we had to choose a book and create a cover for the book. We had a choice of five books:

- The Odyssey
- Orlando
- Heart of Darkness
- The Sliver Sword

I chose Heart of Darkness because I had recently watched Apocalypse Now and I had a bit of background knowledge. I then researched the biography of Joseph Conrad. I'm very interested in Imperialism in Africa and slavery as my father is from the Caribbean .

First of all I drew an image of a hand but the arm was a chain. I found this image a powerful idea that the chain can controls the hands .  I used free hand to copy my design onto lino. Here is my lino cut and development I added an African pattern on to the lino, then printed the results. The black fist symbolises black power and I added more imagery by putting in blood on it with photoshop.

My Lino print cover

This final cover was rendered from scratch on photoshop. I started with a shape and then I added more and more shapes changing the opacity and rubbings parts out to create the metal mask. To make it more realistic I added two overlays one of rust the other of metal dots and then I made my own penguin templates to finish the book cover. This cover is powerful because it's a mask and it's an object thats slaves in the Belgian Congo would have worn as a punishment. I have also included my development.

Creative Review

This is my final for the Creative Review brief. We had to choose a graphic design agency and design the cover using their mission statement but in an abstract form.  The agencies I researched were :

- Saatchi
- Sagmeister & Walsh
- Pentagram
- St. Lukes
- Fallon

I chose St. Luke's because I felt that the mission statement summed up the company very well. They used an Ox with wings as their logo; which is the symbol of St. Luke. I tried various medias but eventually I found old clockwork pieces. I arranged these into to the shape of the Ox and I found this image of cogs working together in a team to achieve the design, representative of St. Luke's the agency.

They also reinvent company images like H.Samuel.co.uk. I thought the use of reinventing time was relevant too. After taking a photo I added textures in photoshop to make the pieces of clock more rusty and old.

My Infographic

My latest project has been to design an Infographic. This is basically showing a timeline but in an unusual way.  I had to do a timeline on a period of art history. I was given dates from the 1880s to 1960s. I chose the 1920s to 1930s, this is because I think it really was a  progressive and experimental period. It was the introduction to modern art moving from realism to surrealism .
Here is my final infographic timeline
I started collecting six different fonts that were inspired by and look like the 1920s to 1930s. Within each font is a different art movement. There are a lot of art movements in 1920s to 1930s so I chose the most recognised. These were :

- American scene painting
- Art Deco
- De Stijl
- Harlem Renaissance
- Precisionism
- Surrealism

I then displayed the six fonts with the dates. I like this because it uses type and image combined with art history.
